Oh man, let me tell you about this recent thing. So, I actually have a life beyond screens. Wild, huh? But, really, I’m a nerd—big time. So off I went on this jaunt, mainly to brag. Okay, not brag, but spill the beans about the UK Games Expo 2025. Names are not my strong suit, but yeah, it’s as big as they say.
It’s in Birmingham. NEC, early June—every year, same deal. Imagine a bazillion board game tables. Heard of video game expos, right? This is like a cousin of those but with less joystick action. Merch everywhere—I should’ve taken out a second mortgage. Seriously, bring wads of cash next time, might need it.
The expo’s split across the NEC and the Hilton. The Buy, Sell, Swap bit… it’s like a treasure trove. Stuff you didn’t know you needed? Found it. I waltzed out with bags, feeling like a pirate with treasure. Time runs quick, no dawdling allowed.
Saturday? Switched gears to Hilton. Watched Werewolf Live and a bunch of other live comedy stuff. Laughed so hard. Then there was Knightmare Live. Knightmare—blast from my childhood TV past. So cheesy, so 80s—gotta see it, even if it’s like a retro time warp.
Later, I bunkered down in the Hilton gaming hall. Beer, games, random folks transforming into pals over a card game. Loved it. There was a game library for the lacking. Seriously, why isn’t this a thing everywhere? Cities, take note.
Sunday zoomed by at the NEC. It’s gigantic—bigger than your imagination. Loads of stalls, eight hundred companies, roughly. Eyes darting everywhere. So much stuff, even got to meet authors, artists—the whole shebang. Accessories too—dice sets, gaming tables, you name it.
Note to self and readers: plan ahead. Book early, like post-Christmas, or you’ll end up sleeping in the car. Hotels fill up fast.
If board games are your jam, this event’s your best friend. Social fun, new games, just bucketloads of awesomeness. I only did two days—learned my lesson. Next year, Friday’s included, no shortcuts. And if you’re not local? These events roam, so maybe one’s bumping closer to you. Dive in if you have the chance, no regrets.
